Arkaroola's Dodwell Observatory
Join astronomer Jeff Portelli from the Sydney Observatory for a long weekend of adventure and pure indulgence! Start with a brief interlude in the Clare Valley for wine tasting at some of the region’s best cellar doors before heading up into the Flinders Ranges and the spectacular scenery of Wilpena Pound. Then venture across rugged terrain into the far reaches of the Flinders to the remote village of Arkaroola.
By day, you can choose from an array of adventure activities including wildlife spotting, 4-wheel drive tours and scenic flights. By night, explore the spectacular skies over the South Australian outback both out in the open and at Arkaroola’s private observatory.
ITINERARY
THU 23 OCTOBER 2008 ADELAIDE – CLARE VALLEY – WILPENA POUND
10.00 am meet at the Arrivals Hall of Adelaide Airport. Drive to the lovely Clare Valley for lunch and a chance to sample some of the region’s fine wine, then continue along a scenic route into the spectacular Flinders Ranges to Wilpena Pound Resort on the banks of Wilpena Creek, nestled amid stately red gums and native pines. After dinner (at own expense) join Jeff Portelli for an evening ‘sky tour’. (L)
FRI 24 OCTOBER WILPENA POUND - ARKAROOLA
A hearty breakfast this morning will be followed by a 2-hour walking tour into ‘the pound’ to enjoy its breathtaking scenery and learn about the history and the wildlife of the region. Later, head deeper into the Flinders to Arkaroola in time for dinner, then spend the evening exploring the night skies at Arkaroola’s Dodwell Observatory. You will also have the chance to use Arkaroola’s ‘star chairs, equipped with powerful 20x80 astronomical binoculars. (BD)
SAT 25 OCTOBER ARKAROOLA
A free day for your own explorations. Choose from a range of optional adventure activities such as guided bush walks, 4WD tours and scenic flights. Alternatively, you may like to take some of Arkaroola’s self-guided activities or simply relax in the peaceful surroundings and take a dip in the pool! This evening there will be a special ‘banquet in the bush’ - a sumptuous five course meal, including wine and beer, in an open-air dining area on the banks of the Wywhyana Creek. (BD)
SUN 26 OCTOBER ARKAROOLA - WILPENA POUND
Take an alternative route from Arkaroola back to Wilpena Pound, through the stunning Flinders Ranges National Park, arriving in time for a leisurely afternoon walk to Old Wilpena Station. Walk amongst magnificent red gums and watch handsome red kangaroos grazing in the bush as you learn about the geological history of Wilpena Pound and the stories of its early European settlers. The interiors of the Station’s outbuildings are among the oldest and best preserved of their type in South Australia. Round off the experience with a glass of bubbly as you enjoy the magical last light of the day and the walls of Wilpena Pound change colour, warmed by the dying sun.

MON 27 OCTOBER WILPENA POUND - ADELAIDE
After breakfast, set off on your journey back to Adelaide. Along the way there will be ample ‘rest stops’ including a break for lunch. Arrive at Adelaide Airport at approximately 4.00pm. (B)
