Ballet is booming in Asia. State of the art performing venues have opened, the emerging middle classes are providing huge new audiences for dance forms of all genres and the major international companies from Europe, Russia and America now visit the Asian capitals on a regular basis.

Thanks to its Russian classical ballet heritage and its vast pool of talent, China leads the way, with the National Ballet of China already a fixture on the international scene. But the innovative Singapore Dance Theatre and the Hong Kong Ballet are definitely worthy of our attention, not to mention Tokyo’s triennial World Ballet Festival, scheduled again for 2009.
