Details are still being finalised but plans are underway for a major tour to Asia in October 2009 by the Sydney Symphony under the musical direction of Vladimir Ashkenazy who will shortly join the orchestra as Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor.

Music lovers are invited to join the Sydney Symphony at the prestigious Beijing Music Festival. Enjoy a week of classical music presented by orchestras, ensembles and soloists from around the world as you discover all the highlights of this extraordinary city.

Following the week in Beijing, there will be optional extensions to all the famous highlights of China, including Xi’an and the Terracotta Warriors, Yangtze River, Guilin and Shanghai.

Shu-Cheen Yu

Shu-Cheen’s career began in traditional Chinese opera where she was trained in acrobatics, marshal arts, acting, dancing and singing, from a very young age. She grew up in the theatre, as both her parents were principal artists with the Shaanxi province local opera company. Of her early artistic childhood she says “whenever they needed a child, rabbit, dog or cat, that was me!”.

Before emigrating to Australia in 1987, Shu-Cheen was one of the most popular folk singers in China. She regularly appeared on the central television & radio stations in Beijing and made five very successful albums. Now living in Melbourne, Shu-Cheen was a member of Opera Australia for six years and performed many principal roles with the company and other state opera companies.

Shu-Cheen has led several cultural tours to the land of her birth with Renaissance Tours.
